Stormfront Studios founder and president Don Daglow today told attendees of his GDC session that it's "impossible" to predict which games format will rule the new generation.

GDC: Jury still out on format wars says Daglow

Interestingly, he said that hardcore gamers still mattered to the success of a platform, despite the many voices claiming that games need to be accessible and reach wider audiences. Along with pricing and a high level of quality games, he said these were the key ingredients to a console’s success.

With that in mind, he added that reports of the PS3’s struggle have been "greatly exaggerated", pointing out that in time the price will fall in time as more games appear, meaning it will be a stronger competitor as time goes on.

Instead, he suggested that the most important thing when it comes to looking at the current market was understanding what the real battles are – such as the fight between formats to control consumer’s activity in their living rooms, HD format clashes and how larger communications companies will react and fight when it comes to the games industry.
